Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty: Refining the Shape and Function of the Nose
Rhinoplasty, often called a nose reshaping surgery, is one of the most refined procedures in aesthetic plastic surgery. It aims to enhance facial harmony by improving the proportions of the nose while maintaining a natural and balanced appearance. In some cases, it can also address breathing difficulties caused by structural irregularities.
Candidate Suitability
Rhinoplasty may be suitable for patients who wish to:
- Refine the shape or size of the nose to achieve better facial balance.
- Straighten a crooked or deviated nasal bridge.
- Correct asymmetry or irregularities caused by injury or prior surgery.
- Improve nasal airflow and function related to structural issues.
During consultation, each patient’s anatomy and goals are carefully assessed to tailor the procedure accordingly.
Procedure Options and Techniques
There are several rhinoplasty approaches, chosen based on the patient’s needs and anatomical features:
- Open rhinoplasty – a small incision is made across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) to allow full visual access to the nasal structures. This approach offers precise control over complex reshaping.
- Closed rhinoplasty – all incisions are hidden inside the nostrils, leading to no external scar and potentially reduced swelling. Often suitable for simpler adjustments.
- Structural rhinoplasty – focuses on reinforcing or rebuilding the nasal framework using cartilage grafts when stronger support is needed.
- Reduction rhinoplasty – helps achieve subtle refinements by reducing the size of specific nasal components such as the tip, bridge, or nostrils.
As with any surgical procedure, there are some potential risks such as mild bleeding and temporary swelling. These are uncommon and usually resolve with appropriate care and time.
Recovery and Aftercare
- An external splint is typically placed on the nose for protection and support during the first week.
- Mild swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose are expected, gradually subsiding in the following weeks.
- Light activities can usually be resumed after three weeks, with more strenuous exercise postponed for about six weeks.
- Patients are encouraged to avoid pressure or trauma to the nose and to keep the area clean and protected.
- Final results become increasingly visible as swelling settles, revealing a refined and natural contour over time.
Rhinoplasty requires both surgical precision and artistic judgment. Each procedure is highly individual, and the surgeon will guide patients through the details of preparation, expectations, and care during consultation.
